Overview of the Global Talent Program (GTIP)
Australia is after the brightest and best global talent to work in ten future-focused sectors. The program is designed to help grow our innovation and tech economies. This will create opportunities for Australians by transferring skills, promoting innovation, and creating jobs. This was the emphasis on the recent federal budget release 2021-22 on a road to economic recovery.
The Global Talent Visa Program, also known as the Global Talent Independent Program, is a streamlined visa pathway for highly skilled professionals who has the capacity to earn above $153,600 per year to work and live permanently in Australia.
A new list of Global Talent priority sectors came into effect On 17 December 2020.

Australia is also a lifestyle destination, and one of the most prosperous, safe and culturally diverse countries in the world. Australia offers opportunities for innovation, with strong trading links and a business-friendly regulatory approach. There are small and big grants available at the state and federal government to help start-ups and entrepreneurs. $550 million is committed over the next 4 years to attract talent and business from overseas. The ATO will provide fast-track tax advice to foreign investors and individual tax residency rules will be simplified.
Through the program, talented individuals will be given permanent residency to make their new lives in Australia. In 2020-2021, there are 15,000 places available under the program.
What is Global Talent (subclass 858) visa and how can I apply for it?
The Global Talent Visa is a three-step visa process that is designed for people who are internationally recognised for exceptional and outstanding achievement in one of the following:
- A profession
- The arts
- Sports,
- Research or academia
You must be active in your field and need an eligible person or organisation to nominate and refer you for this visa.
Step 1 : Eligibility Assessment and Referral
At Migration Affairs we assess your eligibility against the GTI program. Referrals to the program should be done through the Global Talent contact Form. You must have an eligible person or organisation to nominate you for the visa. A nominator is a person or organisation with a national reputation in Australia in the field of expertise being claimed.
The nominator must recommend you as a person of global talent. They will be required to complete a nomination form. At Migration Affairs we can help clients with this requirement.
Step 2: EOI and Consideration for GTI Program
The department will review the referral and may Invite the candidate to apply under the Global Talent Program. A unique GTI Identifier number will be emailed to the candidate along with further information on the Global Talent visa application process for subclass 858 visa for applicants.
Step 3: Visa Application
The candidate can then lodge their Global Talent Visa application, following the departments’ Instructions on the requirements.
Am I eligible for the Global Talent (subclass 858) visa program?
To be eligible to apply for the Global Talent Visa Program under the Global Talent visa, individuals must:
- prove they are internationally recognised with evidence of outstanding achievements
- still be prominent in their field of expertise
- provide evidence that they would be an asset to Australia, in their area of expertise
- have no difficulty obtaining employment in Australia or becoming established in their field
- have a recognised organisation or individual in Australia nominate them as global talent, in the same field as the applicant
Candidates must meet a high standard and show an exceptional track record of professional achievement. This may include senior roles, patents, professional awards, and international publications and memberships.
Places are also available to PhD graduates, and certain PhD students who are nearing completion of their thesis and can demonstrate their exceptional talent and international recognition in a target sector.
