Specialist Skills Stream: Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) Explained

Specialist Skills stream under the Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa is designed to help Australian employers fill critical labour shortages by enabling the sponsorship of highly skilled overseas workers where local talent is unavailable.

What is the Specialist Skills Stream?

While the Skills in Demand visa has three streams, the Specialist Skills stream stands out for its focus speed and flexibility – ensuring that employers can quickly and efficiently access professionals with niche or high level expertise that is difficult to source locally.

The Specialist Skills Stream is available to applicants nominated for occupations classified under ANZSCO major groups 1, 2, 4, 5, or 6, provided the nominated role offers a salary that meets or exceeds the Specialist Skills Income Threshold of $141,210.

Key Features

  • No fixed occupation list – employers can nominate roles outside the CSOL (which applies to the Core Skills stream). However, the nominated must still be an ANZSCO occupation in Major Group 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6. Occupations excluded are trades workers, machinery operators, drivers, or labourers.
  • Minimum annual income requirement – applicant must earn a minimum of $141,210 per annum.
  • Faster processing – applications under this stream are prioritised, reflecting the critical need for these workers.
  • Visa duration up to four years with pathway to permanent residency – employers can sponsor workers for a period of up to 4 years (5 for Hong Kong passport holders). Applicants can potentially apply or permanent residency under the Temporary Residence Transition stream of the Subclass 186 visa after 2 years, subject to meeting the eligibility requirements.
