The South Australia Government has just released its directions for a nomination framework for the Federal Government’s National Innovation Visa (NIV).
Introducing the National Innovation Visa (NIV) – South Australia Nomination
The NIV is a permanent, invitation only visa (subclass 858) for established and emerging leaders with high calibre talent and skills who can make significant contributions that will benefit Australia’s future growth. While it is not a state sponsored visa, SA can nominate select candidates who align with its strategic objectives. Nominees benefit from prioritised processing by the Department of Home Affairs.
SA works within a structured nomination framework to identify and support individuals whose work significantly contributes to the state’s innovation and research landscape. This nomination pathway reflects SA’s commitment to attracting high-calibre, high performing individuals who can drive innovation, growth and productivity in the state.
South Australia will nominate candidates across five distinct pathways:
- Global researchers and thought leaders: Individuals with national research grants, keynote appearances at high profile international conferences, recognised intellectual property, current earnings or a job offer in SA at or above the FWHIT or a PhD with high level of academic influence or thought leadership.
- Entrepreneurs: Individuals engaged in entrepreneurial activities that will lead to the commercialisation of a product or service in SA or development of a business or enterprise that will add value to the SA economy.
- Innovative investors: Investors with a track record of supporting successful innovative ventures or leading internationally reputed companies to their initial public offerings. This includes individuals who are actively investing in innovation ecosystems and helping SA businesses access the capital needed to launch new products and boost productivity.
- Creative talent: Individuals with significant achievements in their creative field, including international awards or recognition.
- Other globally talented individuals: Exceptional talents who may not fit into the above categories but have significant achievements that can benefit South Australia. The assessment under this pathway is assessed on a case by case basis.
SA Nomination Process (Simplified Overview)
- Submit a Registration of Interest (ROI) – Applicants must first submit an ROI through SA’s online portal. This includes providing the required supporting documentation.
- Interview by Assessment Panel of SA Government Representatives – If the ROI application progresses to the next stage, applicants will be contacted by SA and interviewed by an assessment panel.
- Final Nomination – If approved for state nomination, SA will send applicants a completed Form 1000 and a business case letter of support to provide in your EOI to the Department of Home Affairs for the NIV.
- Lodge EOI with the Department of Home Affairs for the NIV
- Apply for the 858 Visa – If you are successful, the Department of Home Affairs will invite you to apply for the NIV – 858 visa.
Benefits from SA nomination for the NIV
Individuals nominated by a State Government Agency will be considered Priority Two under the National Innovation Visa program, meaning their applications will be prioritised by the Department of Home Affairs above most other candidates, reflecting the strength and credibility of a state-endorsed nomination.
Final Thoughts
For established leaders driving real change in their fields, this program presents a compelling and strategic route to permanent residency in Australia. It is especially suitable for individuals already making a tangible impact in their field and ready to contribute to SA’s growth.
